Athletic FAQs

Athletic FAQs

Key information for families exploring Antelope Valley High School athletics. Contact the athletic department with additional questions.

Participation Basics

What are the benefits of participating in high school athletics?

Student-athletes develop teamwork, discipline, compassion, and resilience. Coaches focus on growth and helping every athlete feel successful. Playing time is not guaranteed, but positive experiences and personal development are emphasized.

My student is interested in joining a team. What should we do?

Incoming freshmen should attend the summer informational and clearance program to learn about tryouts, summer workouts, and meet coaches. Current AVHS students can email the head coach of their sport for tryout and camp details.

Can students play more than one sport?

Yes. Many AVHS athletes participate in two or three sports. Coaches welcome multi-sport athletes.

When do practices take place?

Practice schedules follow CIF guidelines and depend on facility availability. Attend team meetings or contact coaches for current practice calendars.

What time commitment should we expect?

Athletes practice before or after school and must attend scheduled competitions, including weekend or holiday events. Coaches provide season calendars during pre-season meetings.

Can students play club sports during the season?

Outside competition can affect CIF eligibility. Consult the Athletic Director before joining outside teams.

Communication

Who should discuss playing time with the coach?

Athletes should initiate respectful conversations about playing time. Administrators do not address playing time concerns. For guidance, read Approaching the Coach.

How do we resolve other concerns?

Follow the athletic chain of command: head coach, athletic director, vice principal over athletics, principal. Starting with the appropriate staff member speeds up resolutions.

Should we send anonymous complaints?

Anonymous complaints are not investigated. Include your name and details so the athletic department can respond effectively.
