AVUHSD 2024-25 

Requirements for the California State Seal of Biliteracy

    To be eligible, students must meet criteria 1 and 2. * 

1) ELA Requirement: Coursework OR Examination – One of the following: 

  • 40 credits with 3.0 GPA or better in English Language Arts (ELA). Seniors should have 35 credits in ELA and are on track to earn 40 credits by the end of the Fall semester, with 3.0 GPA or better.
  • CAASPP SBA ELA exam: Score of 2583 (Standard Met) or better 
  • AP Test - score of 3 or better on an English AP test
  • IB Test - score of 4 or better on a world language IB test
  • SAT Reading & Writing: 480 or higher

2) World Language – Coursework OR Examination – One of the following: 

  • 40 credits with 3.0 GPA or better in the same world language by the end of the second semester of senior year. Levels should not be repeated. 
    • Students may complete world language courses at Antelope Valley College (AVC) or College of the Canyons (COC). Levels should not be repeated. 

    • 14 or more AVC units are equivalent to 47 AVUHSD credits

  • AP – score of 3 or better on a world language AP test
  • IB Test – score of 4 or better on a world language IB test
  • District test with a score of proficient or higher (when available)


* The following only applies to English Learner (EL) students

Students designated as English Learners (EL) must score a Level 4 on the Oral Language Section (Speaking & Listening) of the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC) in addition to meeting criteria 1 and 2.
